Evidence that the economic meltdown continues to impact life in the U.S. is everywhere. The school district for Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta where I live, is facing a $72 million deficit for the next fiscal year. Foreclosures are still battering the real estate market causing a further decline in property tax revenue, while at the same time costs are rising: health insurance, salary increases and rising pension payments.

It is so easy to get distracted by all of the activities surrounding Christmas: preparing for time off work, traveling to see family, digging out family recipes and of course shopping. There is nothing wrong with all of that, although some people spend money they don’t have. The problem is that all these things can quickly distort or completely blot out the actual spiritual conflict which occurred around the birth of Christ.

Several years ago I had a computer that began to act up; the screen would go fuzzy and a loud scratchy sound would come from the speakers. Each time it happened I would turn it off and reboot and it would be ok until the next time, a week or month later. It fuzzed out again when I was in a meeting with some fellow leaders and good friends and as I explained the problem and tried to find an explanation, one of them commented “that is the sound of inevitability.” My friend was right, of course and I had to replace that defective laptop with a new one. In a far more sober and far reaching reality, the economic crisis that is rippling across the nations is the sound of inevitability that God is judging the nations and also the false apostolic order that has been masquerading within the church.

Just when things seem like they can’t get much worse in the economy there is more bad news. Even though over $2 trillion in stimulus was released into the American economy, the month of August saw zero jobs added – none. Now President Obama has proposed a jobs bill that would inject an additional $450 billion into that same economy in a desperate attempt at stimulating growth. America is like the Egypt of Pharaoh’s dream of fat cows being eaten by skinny cows which remained sickly: despite gorging on massive stimulus the economy remains scrawny and emaciated. As the earth faces a double dip recession, is there any reason to rejoice?

I am in South Africa this week where we have gathered people to train them in the prophetic and select some Apprentice Prophets. We have invited people from our churches all across the continent of Africa, the Indian Ocean and also from India and Europe. The training is not primarily gift based; instead a strong emphasis is to reveal the nature of God so that our prophets come to know God – the prophetic is relationship based. And a primary aspect of God’s nature that we must know is His Sovereignty.

“Let them eat cake.” Uttered in response to a report that people had no bread to eat, the phrase is widely attributed to Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution in the 18th century. Out of touch and unaware, the royal family lived in a false world of privilege that came crashing down as the revolution rippled across the social and political structures of France – resulting in the queen being guillotined in 1793. Even though the whole earth is lurching towards crisis, Americans have a longer way to fall in the decline and are generally less prepared to understand how God could deal with the earth through crisis.
